SERIES: O Come All Ye…

SERMON: O Come All Ye Burdened

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 11:28–30; Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23

REVIEW

This week, we looked at Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11 to “come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened,” and explored what it means to experience true rest in Him—especially in a season that often feels exhausting, pressured, and overwhelming.

We remembered that Jesus was speaking to people weighed down by both their own striving (“weary”) and the pressures placed on them by others (“burdened”). That same dynamic exists today: we feel the weight of expectations, performance, grief, anxiety, finances, family tension, and the pressure to hold everything together.

Into that, Jesus offers an invitation—not to try harder, but to come closer. He calls us to take His yoke—a picture of walking side-by-side, staying connected, letting Him carry the weight we cannot. His rest isn’t passive; it’s relational. It is found when we learn His way, walk in His presence, and allow His strength to meet our weakness.

We then connected this to the Christmas truth found in Isaiah 7 and Matthew 1: Jesus is Immanuel—God with us. The King who came at Christmas did not come to add weight to our lives but to lift it. He came near so that weary people could find rest—not just for their bodies, but for their souls.

Jesus is still inviting us today: “Come to Me… and you will find rest for your soul.”

APPLY

Where are the places in your life that you feel the weight of being “weary” (pressure from within) or “burdened” (pressure from outside)?

What are the expectations—your own or others’—that are making this season feel heavier than it should?

How might Jesus be inviting you to walk more closely with Him rather than carry these loads on your own?

What is ONE area this week where you will intentionally “take His yoke”—letting Jesus carry what has been crushing you and choosing to walk in His rest instead?

PRAY

Take a moment to name before God the places where you feel weary or burdened.

Ask God to show you where you have been carrying loads you were never meant to carry.

Spend time thanking Jesus that He is Immanuel—God with us—and that He offers true rest for your soul.

Invite the Holy Spirit to help you stay close to Jesus this week, trusting in His strength rather than your own.
