SERIES: Make Believe
SERMON: Fact or Fiction?
SCRIPTURE: Luke 23:33–46, Psalm 22:1–18, Isaiah 53:3–6, Romans 5:8–18
Review
This week, we continued our Make Believe series by looking at the Crucifixion of Jesus—the central event of our faith—and asking a crucial question: Is it FACT or FICTION?
We explored claims from other worldviews—like Islam, which denies Jesus’ death on the cross—and skeptics who call it a myth. However, historical, archaeological, and literary evidence shows us that the crucifixion of Jesus is one of the most well-attested events in ancient history.
Even secular historians like Bart Ehrman admit:
“That he was crucified is as sure as anything else about him.”
We also saw how prophecy proves the purpose behind the cross.
Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53—written hundreds of years before Jesus—describe what He would endure in stunning detail.
This wasn’t random cruelty or cosmic accident—it was a plan of love carried out to rescue us from sin.
And here’s the bottom line: Jesus didn't just die - He died for YOU!
But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
Jesus suffered the most brutal death imaginable—not by accident, but by design.
To cover the worst parts of your past.
To prove you’re worth saving.
To show that no sin is greater than His grace.
Jesus died, so you don’t have to.
All you have to do is receive the gift of life He’s offering you.
Apply
Jesus didn’t suffer the cross so we could keep living like it didn’t happen.
Take time to reflect:
What does the cross mean to you personally?
Are you living like the crucifixion was just a story… or like it changed everything?
What’s one area of your life where you need to surrender and receive the love Jesus proved through His suffering?
What is ONE WAY you will live in light of the cross this week? Will you trust His forgiveness? Will you let go of shame? Will you invite someone else to hear this good news?
Pray
Thank Jesus for willingly suffering on your behalf—so you could be made right with God.
Ask God to help you see the cross clearly—not as a religious symbol, but as a demonstration of unstoppable love.
Pray for the courage to share this message with someone who needs it.
