SERMON: When Fear Follows
SCRIPTURE: Psalm 27:1–14
REVIEW
This weekend, we wrestled with a raw and honest reality: Fear often follows us, even after the highest spiritual moments. Baptisms, breakthroughs, Easter celebrations — none guarantee that fear won’t sneak back in on Monday morning.
In Psalm 27, David shows us what to do when fear follows. While running for his life, David didn't deny his reality or downplay his fear. Instead, he declared who God is:
Light in the darkness,
Salvation in danger,
Stronghold in instability.
David teaches us:
When fear follows, we declare who God is before we name our fear.
When fear follows, we crave God's presence instead of seeking control.
When fear follows, we’re honest with God instead of pretending everything is fine.
When fear follows, we wait confidently, believing we will see God's goodness.
This isn’t about ignoring our struggles or slapping religious slogans on hard realities. It’s about anchoring ourselves to God's character, even when the storm is raging.
The Gospel itself is at the core of our confidence: Jesus faced our ultimate fear — death — and defeated it. On the cross, He bore our sin, shame, and every fear that could grip our lives. Through the resurrection, He proved fear doesn’t get the final word — He does.
Because Jesus is alive, we don't have to face fear alone. We can seek instead of sink, wait instead of worry, and live fully alive in Him.
APPLY
Where is fear following you right now? Is it in your finances, relationships, health, or future?
What is ONE WAY you will declare God’s truth and seek His presence the next time fear tries to follow you this week?
(Examples: Speaking God's promises aloud, setting aside time for prayer, reaching out to community, memorizing a key verse like Psalm 27:1.)
PRAY
Take time to pray through these prompts:
“God, help me name who You are before I name my fears.”
“Help me to crave Your presence more than I crave control.”
“Give me the courage to be honest with You and the strength to wait with confidence.”
