SERMON: Come, Jesus, Come

SCRIPTURE: Luke 2:25–38

REVIEW

This week, we continued our journey through the Gospel of Luke by stepping into the temple with two unlikely heroes: Simeon and Anna. These elderly worshipers had waited for decades, holding fast to God’s promises in a time when many had lost hope. While others had grown cynical and treated religion as a social tool, Simeon and Anna remained faithful.

They believed that God was still at work and that His greatest miracles were yet to come.

Then, on an ordinary day, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple. Simeon, led by the Holy Spirit, took Jesus into his arms and declared he could now die in peace, because he had seen the salvation of God. Anna joined in worship and praised God, proclaiming that redemption had finally come.

Through their stories, we learned that waiting is not passive. Simeon and Anna show us that waiting can be a form of worship. They lived with a pilgrim’s perspective—eyes fixed not on what had been but on what was still to come. They weren’t just looking back at what God had done in history—they were anticipating what He was about to do through Jesus.

As followers of Christ, we’re called to do the same. We remember the cross and the resurrection, but we also long for Jesus’s return. Real hope isn’t just backward-looking; it’s forward-facing. Like Simeon and Anna, we are called to worship while we wait—and to live with hearts full of expectation that Jesus is coming again.

APPLY

  • Where in your life do you feel stuck waiting right now?

  • Have you lost hope in any area where God once gave you a promise or a dream?

  • Are you only worshiping Jesus for what He’s done, or are you also anticipating what He will do?

What is ONE WAY you will begin to wait with worship—actively trusting and hoping in what Jesus has yet to do?

PRAY

  • Thank God for the areas where He has already proven faithful in your life.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your hope in the promises of God that haven’t yet come to pass.

  • Spend some time worshiping Jesus, not only for what He has done but for what He is going to do.

  • Tell God where you feel weary in waiting, and ask Him to give you endurance, trust, and joy in the process.
