REVIEW
This week, we entered Luke chapter 6 and saw the tension between Jesus and the religious leaders begin to escalate.
Jesus and His disciples were walking through a grainfield on the Sabbath. The disciples picked heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them. The Pharisees immediately accused them of breaking the Sabbath.
But the issue wasn’t stealing grain. The law actually allowed travelers to pick grain by hand as they passed through a field (Deuteronomy 23:25). The Pharisees’ problem was that this happened on the Sabbath.
Over time, the religious leaders had added dozens of extra rules to the Sabbath—what was meant to be a gift of rest had become a heavy burden. Instead of helping people know God, religion had become a system for watching people and judging whether they measured up.
Jesus responds by pointing them to a story from David's life (1 Samuel 21), in which David and his men were given the consecrated bread when they were hungry. Rather than arguing technical details of the law, Jesus points to something bigger: the authority of God’s chosen king.
Then Jesus makes a bold declaration:
“The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Luke 6:5)
The Pharisees were arguing about rules, but Jesus was revealing something much deeper. The one who created the Sabbath—the one who was present at creation itself—is now standing in front of them.
The real issue was never about grain or Sabbath regulations.
The real issue was authority.
Jesus is not merely a teacher, reformer, or religious guide. He is the King—the Lord over everything, even the rhythm of creation itself. And if Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, then He is Lord of our lives as well.
APPLY
The Pharisees were so focused on religious details that they missed the heart of God standing right in front of them.
Religion often does the same thing today. It focuses on rules, appearances, and arguments while missing the bigger question of who Jesus truly is.
Jesus did not come to give us another system of rules to follow. He came to invite us into a relationship with God, in which we live as His children.
Following Jesus isn’t about checking the right boxes.
It’s about surrendering our lives to Him as Lord.
So here is the question for all of us:
What is ONE area of your life where you need to stop debating Jesus and start submitting to Him as Lord?
It might be:
• a decision where you know what Jesus is calling you to do
• a part of your life you are still trying to control
• a belief or lifestyle that conflicts with His teaching
• a fear that keeps you from fully trusting Him
Following Jesus means trusting His authority even when it challenges our comfort or our culture.
PRAY
Use prompts like these as your group prays together:
• “Jesus, help me see You clearly as Lord of my life.”
• “Show me where I have been resisting Your authority.”
• “Teach me to live out my identity as a child of God.”
• “Give me courage to follow You even when it’s difficult.”
• “Help me focus on Your heart instead of getting lost in religion.”
Take a moment to thank Jesus for inviting us not into empty religion, but into a real relationship with God.
