Sermon: Satisfaction — What Do You Crave?
Scripture: Luke 6:21, 25
REVIEW
This week, we focused on the next contrast in Jesus’ Sermon on the Plain:
“Blessed are you who are hungry now, because you will be filled…Woe to you who are now full, for you will be hungry…” (Luke 6:21, 25)
Jesus is not talking primarily about physical hunger—He is talking about spiritual hunger.
This is about the deep question:
Where do we go to be satisfied?
Matthew’s account helps clarify this even more: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.”
So again, Jesus is not teaching how to earn salvation. He is showing what it looks like to live as people in His Kingdom—people who crave the right things.
We saw this through the story of Esau. Esau had an incredible God-given birthright—purpose, identity, and a place in God’s unfolding plan. But in a moment of exhaustion and hunger, he traded all of it for a bowl of stew (Genesis 25).
Scripture says he despised his birthright—he treated something eternal as if it were worthless. Why? Because his hunger was driving him, and his perspective was off.
This is the warning Jesus is giving:
When we are spiritually hungry, we will fill that hunger with something. And if we are not careful, we will trade what is eternal for what is immediate.
We also saw the pattern:
Exhaustion + immaturity = danger
Even people who love God and are trying to follow Him can become vulnerable when they are worn down and lose sight of eternity.
In contrast, we looked at Paul, who learned to reject the things that used to fill him and instead pursue Christ above everything else (Philippians 3:7–14).
This is the difference between being “full” on what the world offers and being “hungry” for what God offers.
Jesus is calling us to live with a pilgrim’s perspective—a constant awareness of NOW vs. LATER. Not how can I feel full right now…but how can God fill me in a way that lasts.
APPLY
This passage brings us to a very personal question:
What are you craving right now?
When your soul feels empty, tired, or overwhelmed—where do you go? We all turn somewhere:
• comfort or entertainment
• relationships or attention
• success or achievement
• distractions or coping habits
None of these things fully satisfies.
So here is the question:
What is ONE area of your life where you are trying to fill your hunger with something other than God?
Be honest and specific. It might be:
• turning to distractions instead of prayer
• looking for validation from others
• coping with stress in unhealthy ways
• chasing success to feel significant
Then take it one step further:
What is ONE way you can begin to pursue God as your source of satisfaction this week?
This is not about perfection.
It’s about redirecting your hunger.
PRAY
Use prompts like these as your group prays together:
• “Jesus, show me what I’ve been using to fill my life.”
• “Help me see where my cravings are misplaced.”
• “Teach me to hunger for righteousness.”
• “Fill my life in a way that nothing else can.”
• “Give me strength to choose You when I’m exhausted.”
Take a moment in silence to confess anything you’ve been turning to instead of God.
Then simply pray:
“Jesus, I’m hungry for You.”
