Sermon: Roots & Fruit
Scripture: Luke 6:43–45
REVIEW
This week, Jesus brought His Sermon on the Plain toward its conclusion by showing us where true Kingdom living comes from.
For the last nine weeks, Jesus has been teaching an upside-down way of life:
Blessed are the poor.
Love your enemies.
Be merciful.
Grow in discernment.
Walk in humility.
The point of the sermon has never been behavior modification.
Jesus transforms us from the inside out.
That leads to His illustration:
"A good tree doesn't produce bad fruit; on the other hand, a bad tree doesn't produce good fruit." (Luke 6:43)
We learned that the Greek words translated as "good" and "bad" carry the ideas of "useful" and "worthless."
A tree is considered "good" because it fulfills its purpose.
An apple tree is valuable because it produces apples.
A tomato plant is useful because it produces tomatoes.
In the same way, God's people were created with a purpose—to live for His Kingdom and produce lives that reflect His character.
Jesus then explains that fruit always reveals the roots. What our lives consistently produce is connected to what our hearts are rooted in.
The Apostle Paul expands on this in Galatians 5.
When we root our lives in the values of this world, the fruit reflects the flesh.
When we root our lives in the Spirit, the fruit becomes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
The fruit doesn't create the roots. The roots produce the fruit.
Jesus also warned us against settling for appearances. It's possible to manufacture an image of spiritual maturity while never allowing God to transform our hearts. People may see the appearance of fruit. God sees the roots.
Jesus finishes by saying:
"A good person produces good out of the good stored up in his heart... for his mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart." (Luke 6:45)
Everything eventually flows from the heart.
Our words.
Our reactions.
Our relationships.
Our priorities.
Our generosity.
Our obedience.
Pressure doesn't create what is inside us. It reveals what we've been rooted in all along. Real fruit comes from deep roots in Christ.
APPLY
Jesus invites us to let Him transform our hearts.
So this week, ask yourself:
What are my life and my reactions revealing about what my heart is rooted in?
Think about the areas where pressure exposes what's really inside you. It might be:
Your words when you're frustrated
Your attitude when life is difficult
Your priorities with time or money
Your relationships
Your response to disappointment
Your thought life
Then ask:
What is ONE way I can deepen my roots in Christ this week?
That may mean:
Spending intentional time in God's Word
Praying before reacting
Confessing an area where you've been rooted in worldly values
Choosing obedience over comfort
Investing more deeply in Christian community
Remember:
Real fruit isn't manufactured.
It grows naturally from a heart that is deeply rooted in Jesus.
PRAY
Use prompts like these:
"Father, help my roots grow deeper in You."
"Show me where my heart has become rooted in the values of this world."
"Produce the fruit of Your Spirit in my life."
"Help my words and actions reflect a transformed heart."
"Make my life useful for Your Kingdom."
Spend a few moments quietly asking God to reveal what your life has been producing. Then thank Him that He doesn't simply ask us to look different on the outside—He transforms us from the inside out.
