SERMON: Move Toward the Light

SERIES: The King’s People

SCRIPTURE: Luke 8:16–21

REVIEW

This passage continues the teaching Jesus began with the Parable of the Sower. Jesus ended that parable by saying:

“Let anyone who has ears to hear listen.” — Luke 8:8

The disciples immediately showed us what listening looks like. They didn't simply hear Jesus' words and move on. They moved toward Him, asked questions, and sought understanding. Jesus gave them more revelation.

Now Jesus changes the metaphor from seed to light:

SEED = THE WORD OF GOD

LIGHT = THE REVELATION OF GOD

Jesus says no one lights a lamp and then hides it. A lamp is placed where its light can be seen. Then He promises:

“For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and brought to light.” — Luke 8:17

Jesus didn't come to leave humanity in darkness. The mysteries of God's Kingdom would increasingly be revealed through Jesus Himself, His death and resurrection, His ascension, and the ministry of His apostles.

That's why Jesus immediately says:

“Therefore take care how you listen.” — Luke 8:18

We live surrounded by what we might call manufactured light. Culture offers countless ways of understanding life through human wisdom, status, wealth, power, technology, experience, and our own desires. Some of those things can be useful, but they make terrible gods.

Jesus is the true Light, and His revelation must be the standard by which we understand everything else.

The disciples model what Jesus is asking us to do: move toward the Light.

Then Jesus' family arrives, and He makes a surprising statement:

“My mother and my brothers are those who hear and do the word of God.” — Luke 8:21

Jesus isn't rejecting His biological family. He is describing what characterizes the King's People.

Luke has now repeated the idea three times:

“Let anyone who has ears to hear listen.” — v.8

“Take care how you listen.” — v.18

“My mother and my brothers are those who hear and do the word of God.” — v.21

Hearing God's Word is not the finish line. The King's People receive it and respond to it.

James eventually becomes a powerful example. Jesus' brother did not initially believe in Him. But after Jesus' death and resurrection, the risen Christ appeared to James. James believed, eventually led the Jerusalem church, and later wrote:

“But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” — James 1:22

James eventually lived the very truth Jesus taught:

THE KING’S PEOPLE HEAR THE KING

AND DO WHATEVER HE SAYS.

This obedience does not earn our place in God's family. Eternal life is a gift received through faith in Jesus Christ. We don't do our way into the family. Jesus has already done everything necessary to save us.

For those who have believed, obedience is the response of discipleship. We keep moving toward the Light, receiving the Word, and allowing our King to lead us.

APPLY

Jesus' command is incredibly practical:

“Take care how you listen.”

The question isn't simply, “Am I hearing God's Word?” The question is:

“Am I moving toward the Light and allowing what Jesus says to actually change what I do?”

Think about ONE area of your life where you already know what Jesus says, but your actions haven't caught up with what you've heard.

Maybe it's forgiveness.

Maybe it's generosity.

Maybe it's how you treat someone.

Maybe it's a habit you need to change.

Maybe you've been allowing culture, your feelings, or your own wisdom to provide more direction than God's Word.

What is ONE thing you already know Jesus has said that you need to actually do?

The King's People don't merely hear the King.

They do whatever He says.

PRAY

Use these prompts:

“Father, give me a humble and teachable heart.”

“Show me where I've settled for manufactured light instead of moving toward Your truth.”

“Reveal where I've heard Your Word but haven't responded to it.”

“Give me courage to obey what You've already made clear.”

Take a moment in silence and ask:

“Father, what do You want to show ME today?”
