REVIEW

This week, we looked at the passage many of us know by heart but may have never truly understood—what Jesus called the model for how we pray.

We saw that the prayer Jesus gives is not something to memorize and recite, but a template that shapes the posture of our hearts. Jesus wasn’t giving us what to pray—He was showing us how to pray.

We moved through four movements that help us enter into meaningful, God-centered conversation:

1. RELATIONSHIP — “Our Father in heaven.”

We begin by remembering who we are speaking to. God is not distant or indifferent—He is our Father who loves us perfectly. Yet He is also the God of heaven—closer than close and bigger than big. Prayer begins by grounding ourselves in this identity and belonging.

2. REVERENCE — “Your name be honored as holy.”

We acknowledge that God is unlike anyone else—perfect, just, faithful, and set apart. This moves our attention away from ourselves and reminds us that prayer is not about our fame, our will, or our agenda. It is about honoring the God who alone is holy.

3. REIGN — “Your kingdom come. Your will be done…”

This is the collision point. We confess the ways we’ve built our own kingdoms, trusted our own control, or lived as though our will sits on the throne. Prayer becomes powerful when we surrender and say together: “God, Your way over my way. Your kingdom over mine.”This is where heaven moves.

4. REQUESTS — “Give… forgive… deliver…”

Only after relationship, reverence, and surrender have been established do we bring our needs. Daily bread (our provision).Forgiveness (our relationships).Deliverance (our weakness). These matter deeply to God, but prayer is not primarily about moving God toward our will—it is about moving us toward His.

And this is the gospel within the prayer: We can call God Father because Jesus made a way. We can surrender our will because Jesus surrendered His first. We can ask for forgiveness because Jesus paid our debt in full. We can ask for deliverance because Jesus defeated the evil one once and for all.

APPLY

This week, we want to move the model prayer from information to formation.

What is ONE part of the model prayer you most need to practice right now?

  • RELATIONSHIP: Do you need to remember you belong to the Father?

  • REVERENCE: Do you need to slow down and honor God’s holiness over your own importance?

  • REIGN: Do you need to surrender control in a specific area of your life?

  • REQUESTS: Do you need to ask God for provision, forgiveness, or protection?

Which ONE movement will you intentionally practice this week, and what will that look like?

PRAY

Use these prompts to guide your time with God:

RELATIONSHIP

  • “Father, help me remember who You are and who I am to You.”

REVERENCE

  • “Help me honor Your name above my own plans, comfort, and reputation.”

REIGN

  • “Show me where I’m building my own kingdom. I surrender this area to You.”

REQUESTS

  • “Here is what I need today…Here is who I need to forgive…Here is where I need Your protection…”

Take a few minutes to pray through each movement—slowly, honestly, and expectantly.
