Sermon: Covet Covers It
Scriptures: Deuteronomy 5:21, James 1:14-15, Genesis 3:6, Galatians 5:16-24
REVIEW
This week, we continued our discussion on the Ten Commandments by focusing on the tenth commandment: Do not covet. We explored how coveting, or improper desire, underpins our struggle to obey not just the final commandment but all the others as well. Coveting is unique because it deals with the internal—our desires and motivations—whereas the other commandments primarily address external actions.
We learned that improper desires (coveting) are the starting point for sin, as James 1 describes the progression: desire leads to sin, and sin leads to death. This chain reaction can be seen in how coveting drives dishonesty, theft, adultery, and even our relationship with God. Coveting is at the root of all disobedience to God’s commands.
However, we are not without hope. Galatians 5 teaches us that we can break the cycle of sin and death by walking in the Spirit and crucifying our fleshly desires. Jesus calls us to deny ourselves and take up our cross, leading to a life of true freedom and purpose.
