SERIES: The Great Invite

SERMON: Lost and Found

SCRIPTURE: Luke 5:27-32

Review

The movement of Jesus has always been about more than just meeting together—it’s about moving together in faith. Jesus invites us to follow Him, not just once, but continually.

In Luke 5, we see a powerful example of this invitation when Jesus calls Levi (Matthew), a tax collector, to follow Him. Tax collectors were despised in their society and seen as traitors and corrupt, yet Jesus saw him, called him, and changed him.

  • Jesus didn’t see Matthew for his past—He saw him for his future.

  • Jesus calls people to follow Him—no matter how far they’ve strayed.

  • Found people find people! The moment Matthew follows Jesus, he throws a banquet and invites others to meet Jesus, too.

But not everyone was happy… The Pharisees and religious leaders criticized Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus responded: "It is not those who are healthy who need a doctor, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." (Luke 5:31-32)

Jesus didn’t come for people who think they have it all together—He came for those who know they need saving.

Apply

  • Who in your life needs the invitation to meet Jesus?

  • Like Matthew, are you living as someone who invites others to the table? Or are you standing on the sidelines, afraid of how people will respond?

  • Are you seeing people the way Jesus sees them—beyond their past and into their potential?

Big Application Question: Who is ONE person you will personally invite to experience Jesus this week?

Pray

  • Thank God He sees beyond our past and calls us into a new future.

  • Ask for the courage to invite others, even when it feels uncomfortable.

  • Pray for the lost, that they would come and see the life Jesus offers.
