Sermon: Pursuit Requires Humility

Scripture: Philippians 2:1-18

REVIEW:

  • Key Idea: Pursuit Requires Humility.

  • Main Points:

  • Prideful Pursuits are Trivial: Modern society often focuses on self-promotion, leading to trivial and unfulfilling pursuits.

  • Jesus’ Example of Humility: Jesus, though God, humbled Himself to serve humanity and was exalted by God (Philippians 2:5-11).

  • Paul’s Encouragement: Paul urges believers to live humbly, valuing others above themselves and living blamelessly in a crooked world (Philippians 2:1-4, 12-18).

In week 2, the central command in Paul's letter was to "live a life worthy of the gospel of Christ." Immediately following this command, Paul focuses on the key disposition we need to implement—humility. Paul knew that prideful pursuits are always trivial! To help hammer home his point, Paul quoted an ancient hymn about Jesus's humility.

APPLY:

  1. Self-Reflection: In what areas of your life is PRIDE causing you to pursue trivial things?

  2. Eternal Perspective: What changes can you make to ensure your pursuits align with an eternal perspective rather than short-term gains?

  3. Humility in Action: What is ONE WAY you can follow Jesus' example of humility in your daily interactions or decisions this week?

PRAY:

Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where Pride is creeping into your pursuits, and look to Jesus to inspire your fight for an eternal perspective!
