RAP SHEET - BAPTISMS
SERMON: Baptism Sunday
SERIES: The King’s People
SCRIPTURE: Luke 8:19–25
REVIEW
This Sunday was different. Instead of only hearing about what it means to respond to Jesus, we watched people respond to Jesus.
We watched people step into the water and publicly declare:
Jesus saved me.
Jesus is my King.
I belong to Him.
Baptism doesn't save us. Eternal life is God's gift received through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is a response to that gift, a public declaration that we have believed in Jesus and now belong to Him.
Throughout Scripture, God's people regularly stop to remember and celebrate what God has done. Baptism gives us an opportunity to do the same.
Every person who stepped into the water has a story. Some stories are dramatic. Others may seem ordinary. Some people can point to a radical turning point. Others came to understand and believe the Gospel gradually.
But the cornerstone of every story is the same:
Jesus saves.
Watching someone else's baptism can also remind us of our own story. The same grace that saved them saved us. The same Gospel they believed is the Gospel we believed. The same Jesus they follow is the Jesus we follow.
Baptism Sunday isn't only a celebration of the people who got in the water.
It's a celebration of Jesus!
APPLY
This week, instead of looking for another lesson to learn, let's take time to remember what God has already done.
What stood out to you during Baptism Sunday? Maybe it was a particular baptism, someone's reaction, something that happened during worship, or simply seeing people take a public step of faith.
Then let's turn our attention toward our own stories:
How has Jesus changed your life?
It doesn't need to be a dramatic testimony. Maybe there is something Jesus saved you from, something He has grown in you, something He has carried you through, or a way your life is different today because you know Him.
As we hear each other's stories, let's remember:
God is still changing lives.
PRAY
Thank God for the people who were baptized and the stories represented in the water.
Celebrate specific ways Jesus has changed our own lives.
Pray for continued growth in the lives of those who took a step of obedience through baptism.
Pray by name for friends, family members, coworkers, or neighbors who don't yet know Jesus.
Ask God to use our lives and our church to help more people encounter the Gospel.
Pray with the expectation that the names we're praying for today could become the baptism stories we celebrate in the future.
