REVIEW
As we step into Luke chapter 4, we see Jesus—fresh from His baptism—led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Before beginning His public ministry, He entered a season of fasting and dependence.
Luke records that Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit and led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He fasted for forty days. This wasn’t a random detour; it was preparation for purpose. The wilderness was where Jesus confronted temptation, demonstrated obedience, and modeled what it means to rely entirely on the Father.
As a church, we are following His example by setting aside 24 hours to fast and pray in preparation for baptisms. Just as Jesus’ fast prepared Him to launch His mission, our fast is meant to prepare our hearts for what God is doing in and through MetaChurch.
Fasting is not about proving something to God—it’s about depending completely on Him. Jesus shows us that spiritual battles are not fought through human strength but through surrender and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
APPLY
Each of us faces moments when the Holy Spirit leads us into “the wilderness.” These are seasons that stretch us, test us, and teach us to depend on God.
This week, reflect on what the Spirit might be calling you to lay down or step into.
Where are you resisting His leading because it feels uncomfortable?
What is one area of your life where you need to stop striving in your own power and start depending on God’s strength?
How can this fast become more than giving up food—how can it become an act of full surrender?
When we empty ourselves through fasting, we make room for the Spirit to fill us. God often meets us most powerfully in the places of hunger, stillness, and dependence.
PRAY
Thank God that Jesus went before us into the wilderness and came out victorious.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what He wants to teach you through this season of fasting and prayer.
Confess any areas where you have relied on your own strength instead of God’s.
Pray for our church as we fast together—asking God to awaken a hunger for His presence, to prepare every heart for Baptism, and to empower us for the mission ahead.
