This week, we reached the conclusion of both The Kingdom Way series and Jesus' Sermon on the Plain. After ten weeks of teaching what life in God's Kingdom looks like,

Jesus leaves us with one final question:

"Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and don't do the things I say?" (Luke 6:46)

Jesus isn't asking whether we've heard His teaching. He's asking whether we've built our lives upon it.

He illustrates this with two builders.

The first man digs... and keeps digging... until he reaches solid rock. Then he builds his house on that foundation. When the flood comes—and Jesus assumes it will—the house stands because its foundation is secure.

The second man also builds a house. From the outside, it may have looked just as impressive. But he skips the foundation entirely. When the flood comes, the house immediately collapses because it has nothing solid underneath it.

The difference wasn't the storm.

Both builders faced the same flood.

The difference was the foundation.

Throughout this series, Jesus has been showing us what it means to "dig deep." Every Kingdom value requires us to dig beneath the surface of our hearts:

• trusting Christ instead of worldly security

• finding satisfaction in Him instead of temporary things

• loving our enemies

• choosing mercy over judgment

• pursuing humility instead of hypocrisy

• allowing Him to transform our roots so that good fruit grows

Simply hearing those teachings is not enough.

James echoes Jesus when he writes, "Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." Kingdom living is built on surrendering to Jesus as Lord—not merely saying the words, but living under His authority.

The gospel begins with that foundation. We are saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by our works. But once we belong to Him, He calls us to build our lives on His Word. Obedience doesn't earn our place in God's family—it is how we faithfully build upon the foundation He has already given us.

APPLY

Every one of us is building something with our lives.

The question isn't whether we're building.

The question is what foundation we're building on.

Ask yourself:

What is ONE area of my life where Jesus is calling me to move from hearing His words to obeying them? Maybe that's:

• forgiving someone you've been holding onto bitterness against

• trusting God instead of your own security

• choosing humility instead of pride

• making time to be in God's Word consistently

• taking a step of obedience you've been putting off

Remember:

Floods will come. Hard seasons are part of life. The goal isn't to avoid storms—it's to build on a foundation that will hold when they arrive.

PRAY

Use prompts like these:

• "Jesus, show me where I've been calling You Lord without fully following You."

• "Help me dig beneath the surface and build my life on Your truth."

• "Reveal any false foundations I've been trusting."

• "Give me courage to obey what You've already shown me."

• "Thank You for being the only foundation that will never fail."

Spend a few moments quietly asking God to reveal where He is inviting you to dig deeper.

Then thank Him that through faith in Christ, He gives us a foundation that can withstand every storm.
