SCRIPTURE: Luke 1:34-38

REVIEW

This week, we continued Mary’s story and saw her powerful response to the angel’s prophecy. Last week, we saw the announcement of the Messiah. This week, we watched as Mary steps into her calling, even though she doesn’t fully understand it.

She asks, “How can this be?”—a question rooted in faithful curiosity, not doubt. Unlike Zechariah, whose “How can I know this?” was met with rebuke, Mary’s question opens the door to a divine explanation that echoes through all of Scripture.

Gabriel’s answer doesn’t lay out a detailed plan—it gives her a word from heaven that connects her to the Creation, the Tabernacle, and the Temple. The Holy Spirit would “come upon” her, and the power of the Most High would “overshadow” her—just like God’s glory filled the Tabernacle in Exodus 40. Mary becomes a new “tent of meeting”—God with us, Immanuel.

What happened to Mary in a literal way is now spiritually happening to us. Just like Mary carried Jesus into the world, we carry His Spirit into the world (Acts 1:8). Paul says we are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). The same God who overshadowed Mary now empowers the Church to carry the message of Jesus to the ends of the earth.

Mary’s final response is the key: “See, I am the Lord’s servant... May it happen to me as you have said.” That’s how we step into our calling—we say yes to God, even before we have all the answers.

• What examples—past or present—can you look to as affirmation that God is still working and still calling?

• Ask God to build your faith when His call doesn’t make sense.

• Thank Him that you don’t have to figure it all out—you just have to say yes.

• Ask the Spirit to fill you, empower you, and send you to be His witness.
